The federal government has proposed to increase the budget allocation for the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication by 15.8 per cent to Rs 22.50 billion. “Increased funding is a reflection of government’s continued commitment to fast-track Pakistan’s digital transformation and fortify the country’s technology infrastructure.
The extra money is expected to help push forward a range of initiatives including improving digital connectivity, boosting IT exports, e-governance projects, cyber security and the development of new technologies such as artificial intelligence and cloud computing. It also fits into Pakistan’s vision of encouraging innovation and creating a more technology-driven economy that can compete in the global digital arena.
The new funding could be key in enhancing internet access, building out startup ecosystems and improving digital public services in the country, say industry experts. Investment in telecom infrastructure and digital skills development can also create new employment opportunities, enabling freelancers and tech entrepreneurs to contribute more effectively to the national economy.
The increased allocation for the ministry of IT and Telecom is a good signal to the investors and the technology stakeholders as Pakistan continues its journey towards a digitally connected future. The budget, if used wisely, can fast-track digital inclusion, bolster the local IT industry and help position Pakistan as an emerging technology hub in the region.
