OpenAI Launches GPT-5.5 Instant as New Default Model for ChatGPT

OpenAI has introduced a new model called GPT-5.5 Instant, and it is now becoming the default version inside ChatGPT. This update replaces GPT-5.3 Instant, which had been the standard for faster responses. The company says the new version keeps the same speed but improves accuracy, especially in areas where mistakes can cause problems, such as legal, medical, and financial topics.

The broader GPT-5.5 model was released earlier, with a focus on coding, research, and knowledge-based tasks. This instant version is designed for everyday use. It aims to give quick responses without losing too much depth or context. That balance has been a challenge in earlier models, where faster versions often came with weaker reasoning.

What Is GPT-5.5 Instant?

GPT-5.5 Instant is a lightweight version of OpenAI’s latest model. It is built for speed but with better control over errors compared to earlier Instant models.

It is built to respond fast. It also reduces wrong or made-up answers. This is called “hallucination” in AI.  It matters more in topics where accuracy is important.

OpenAI shared test results to show improvement. In the AIME 2025 math test, the student scored 81. 2. The older model scored 65.4. In the MMMU-Pro test, it scored 76. The earlier version scored 69.2. These results show better reasoning. Actual performance can still change based on use.

Another change comes in how the model handles context. GPT-5.5 Instant can pull information from previous chats, uploaded files, and even connected tools like Gmail. This allows responses to feel more tailored instead of starting from scratch each time.

At the moment, this feature is rolling out first to Plus and Pro users on the web. Mobile support is expected soon. OpenAI also plans to extend access to free and business users over time.

Alongside this, ChatGPT will now show where certain answers come from when memory is used. Users can check these sources, remove outdated ones, or fix them if something looks wrong. Shared chats, however, will not reveal these memory details to others.

For developers, GPT-5.5 is available through the API under the label “chat-latest.” The older 5.3 model will remain accessible for a short period before being phased out.

The update comes at a time when OpenAI is still dealing with mixed reactions from earlier model changes. When GPT-4o was removed, many users pushed back. Some had grown attached to how that model responded, describing it as more personal or relatable.

OpenAI still moved ahead and retired the model in early 2026. The focus shifted to performance and consistency, not keeping older versions. Now GPT-5.5 Instant is in place.
Speed still matters, but reducing errors is a bigger focus. The system also handles ongoing chats better now.
