On Tuesday, Google announced that people in the U.S. can now simply change their Gmail address without having to create a new account or losing access to existing emails and other data.
To use this feature,
- Go to your Google Account settings
- Then navigate to Personal info > Email > Google Account email.
- From there, tap the “Change Google Account email” button to begin updating your username.
Users can change their Gmail address once every 12 months, and during this time, the new address cannot be deleted. Google ensures that all old emails are preserved, and your old email address will still work as an alternate email. Both the old and new addresses can be used to sign in to Google services.
Earlier, this update was spotted in some Hindi-speaking regions, with Google’s support page explaining the username change process in Hindi, according to 9to5Google.
Google also clarified that the rollout is gradual, so not all users will see the option immediately.
